Watford have secured the long-term future of Northern Ireland international Craig Cathcart, announcing the defender has signed a new contract with the club.

Cathcart, who started out at Manchester United but joined Watford from Blackpool in 2014, after a previous loan spell with the Hornets in 2009, has put pen to paper on a new four year deal, which will now keep him at Vicarage Road for the better part of the remainder of his career.

Marco Silva clearly has Cathcart, 28, as part of his future plans or the Watford boss, of course replacing Walter Mazzarri this summer, wouldn’t have dished out a new deal, let alone one that takes him through until 2021.

An ongoing hernia problem restricted Cathcart, who had become a key player for club and country, to just 15 Premier League appearances last season.
