Modern-day Hornet’s legend Tommy Smith is being heavily linked with a loan return to Vicarage Road by the tabloid press.

Smith, 31, is one of 11 first-team forwards on the books at Queens Park Rangers now, and has recently been super-seeded by the January arrivals of Federico Macheda, Djibril Cisse and Bobby Zamora.

The Hemel Hempstead-born winger-cum-forward has been a regular for the Hoops this season, making 18 appearances and scoring two goals. However his future at Loftus Road looks decidedly bleak.

Wales Online believe that Smith, who made 237 league starts in two spells in WD18, is wanted on loan by his former manager Malky Mackay at Cardiff City.

Mackay is also keen to bolster his attacking forces having missed out on Marvin Sordell who joined Bolton in a £3m deadline day swoop.

They say ‘never go back’ but Smith has already toppled that barrier, so come home again Tommy!
