Free agent David Mirfin is set to join Watford on a two-year deal, subject to medical according to Sky Sports News.

The former Scunthorpe United defender left Glanford Park this summer after three years in Lincolnshire where he made 95 league starts.

Twenty-six year-old Mirfin previously plied his trade in League One with Huddersfield where he made 144 league starts before former Iron boss Nigel Adkins swooped to take him further north for 150k.

Whether or not Watford need central defensive cover is open to debate.

Martin Taylor and Adrian Mariappa were virtual ever-presents last season leaving Dale Bennett and peripheral figure whilst Tom Aldred has recently left on-loan. One has to assume cheap cover can’t hurt.

Stick with Vital Watford for all the latest on this deal and any other involving the ‘Orns.
