With his side surrendering a 2-1 lead at the death to somehow hand all three points back to home side Blackpool in the dying minutes, Malky Mackay was an understandably dejected figure at the final whistle.
The Hornet’s away form this season, indeed these last two seasons has been very poor and have managed just three away wins in the league and a further one at Barnet in the Carling Cup.
Following the Hornet’s latest away day defeat, the gaffer had this to say:
‘It’s disappointing. To go into the last ten minutes, and to be blocking their attacks and battling well, then for them to get two goals is really disappointing.
‘We had chances today but I realised that it was going to be a tough place to come and a tough game for us. We should not have allowed the game to slip through our grasp and even though we were under pressure against a good team, we were 2-1 up with ten minutes to go.
‘We’ve got to be able to close a game out, and that’s just a lack of experience in a young group like today.
‘We battled well in the shape we played this afternoon and we looked good playing off that shape.
‘With the second goal we certainly did, it was the experience that counted against us at the end of the day.’ Said Mackay.
Malky then continued to talk about Scott Loach’s impressive performance between the sticks, and reading between the sticks, perhaps there has been an approach for the Hornet’s Young Lion, or maybe even Braveheart is resigned to losing his star stopper:
‘Scott was making sure he was keeping consistent with the performances he’s been producing over the last few weeks for us’ said the Watford boss.
‘That’s what I expect from him now. He’s got to make saves, but at the same time, I’d rather he hadn’t had to make so many today.
‘I expect people to be watching Scott as he’s the England U21 goalkeeper, but I’ll reiterate that I don’t need to sell him right now unless something ridiculous comes in.
P>’He needs to play football and if he goes to a Premiership side now, he won’t play football.
‘Scott needs to advance in his career and he needs to keep doing what he’s doing here.’
