Former Watford gaffer Malky Mackay has revealed that he was not allowed contractually to release a statement having left the club over the summer.

The decision by the former Watford boss to join Championship rivals Cardiff City over the summer did not go down well with a number of supporters.

However, the lack of a statement to praise the club upon departure disappointed Watford fans even more.

But, speaking to The Watford Observer after the Boxing Day draw, Mackay revealed that he was not contractually allowed:

“I am hearing that people were upset that I didn`t make a statement but contractually I wasn`t able to make a statement at the time about how good these people are.’

Mackay continued:

“It is good that this week has come and questions are asked because now I can talk about certain parts of it.

“I had my reason for leaving, that I won`t go into, but there are still good people at this football club.’

It certainly makes you wonder what Mackay’s reasons for leaving were…
