Cowie becomes the latest to join Cardiff

Winger Don Cowie has this afternoon joined Cardiff on a free transfer.

The Scot had been offered improved terms on his contract which was due to run out yesterday. However these terms had not been agreed effectively leaving Cowie as a free transfer.

Subsequently the former Inverness midfielder was able to re-join boss Mackay in south Wales.

Speaking to the Official Site, Chairman Graham Taylor said:

‘Speaking on behalf of the owner and the Board of Watford FC, we are both surprised and disappointed to learn of Cardiff City’s continued advances for this football club’s personnel.

‘Don Cowie becomes the fifth person to have joined Cardiff City from Watford this summer – when we add Malky to three members of staff and now a very talented player.

‘Let’s hope it stops here.’

GT explained that the Scottish international had a clause in his contract meaning the club would offer him fresh terms on his contract once survival was secured.

Negotiations had been ongoing for sometime and contrary to popular belief the 28 year-old had never actually inked a new deal at Vicarage Road.

With Mackay’s inside knowledge of the football club, he was able to capitalize on the non-contract status of Cowie and poach yet another former colleague.

Cowie joined Watford in January 2008 under Brendan Rodgers for £50k. It turned out to be extremely shrewd business as the Scot impressed hugely out wide or in the centre of midfield.

A virtual ever present in the three and a half seasons he spent in WD18, Cowie went on to gain international recognition is an ‘Orn, winning caps against Japan, Wales and Brazil for the Tartan Army.

Never one to throw in the towel, Cowie always fought back through bad patches in form the only way he knew how – non-stop graft. Back and forward, he was the epitome of a modern workhorse winger.

In total, Cowie 87 league starts for the club scoring nine goals.
