Head coach Gianfranco Zola has admitted that there are still too many first-team players on the club’s books whilst confirming how players are recruited by the club.

Watford now have 42 professionals if you include the three that are currently out on-loan, Adam Thompson, Britt Assombalonga and Dale Bennett.

Zola had said earlier in the summer that he only needed ‘two or three’ new additions, however the Hornets signed six on-loan on Transfer Deadline Day, including three centre-backs.

Speaking to The Watford Observer, Zola admitted some would have to leave sooner rather than later:

“I think it is better to have some extra players than to not have enough players.”

“It is not ideal but we have to do the best we can to make the club successful,’ conceded Zola.

“There will be some players who will be going but I believe it will also be for their own good because they can not stay here training and not playing. So, yes, there will be players that will have the choice to go.’

The former West Ham United boss also admitted that his role in the recruitment of players is minimal, with Technical Director Gian Luca Nani sourcing potential targets and offering them up to the 46 year-old.

“It works like every team in Europe does and also some of the biggest teams in this country.

‘I work on the pitch, the club knows what type of football I want to play, the club knows what type of players I need to play my best football and the club provides me with a choice of different players. Then I choose them,’ admitted Zola.

The former Chelsea attacker also revealed to The Watford Observer that it was the club’s policy on contract renewals for older players that saw Martin Taylor leave the club.

“I believe it relates to age. I believe the club has a policy of not offering longer contracts to players of a certain age at this stage of the season – and it is important to stress that it is at this stage of the season,’ said Zola

“This is the policy of the club right now so we have to respect that.’
