Aidy Boothroyd has capped a busy day at the office by signing Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson on-loan for three months.

Johnson is just twenty years of age and can be deployed on either flank, but prefers the left. Since making his full debut for Boro’ in the Uefa Cup final run in 2005, Johnson has made just eleven starts for Boro is his brief career with another 16 appearances coming from the bench. With the form of Stewart Downing, a place in the first team seemed unlikely and a loan move to Vicarage Road is ideal for both parties.

Johnson will now go head-to-head with Jobi McAnuff for the place on the left of midfield. But, after joining so late in the week, Friday, Johnson is unlikely to start.

Aidy says:
‘He’s a young liverwire who I enquired about last season. Gareth Southgate then called me recently to see if I was still interested. I’m thrilled to have him here as he’ll push Tom Smith and Jobi McAnuff and give us further options in the wide positions.

Leaving the Vic’ is Cedric Avinel who has joined Stafford Rangers on-loan for a month. Avinel has made two first team appearances in the Carling Cup this term and will benefit from the experience in non-league.

The young Frenchman made his full Hornets debut at Reading last season, and, in my eyes, impressed. Since then he has found first team chances hard to come by with the arrival of Matt Jackson.

Mr Bodell says:
‘It was inevitable that Cedric would leave on loan. He needs to mature and there’s no better place than the lower leagues.’

‘As for Adam Johnson, I’ve never seen him live but he has always impressed on ‘MOTD’. Hopefully he will push McAnuff for the left midfield berth as Jobi has yet to really fufil his potential here too.’

Good luck to Adam in his Watford career!
