Barnsley boss Danny Wilson admitted that his side had been ‘knocked for six’ by Watford in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Vicarage Road.

Cristian Battocchip put the Hornets ahead after five minutes and Troy Deeney doubled Watford’s advantage 11 minutes later.

The Hornets were in complete control early on, but Barnsley managed to work their way back into the game before Alex Merkel’s 74th minute strike ended the contest.

Speaking afterwards to Sporting Life, Wilson cited Battocchio’s early opener as a huge dent to the Tykes’ prospects.

‘That just knocked us for six. We came with a game plan and we knew exactly what we wanted to do, get the ball down and cause them some problems, then we got hit with a sucker punch within minutes of the start of the game.’

Wilson continued: ‘It was a poor, poor goal to give away and defensively it was suicidal and then to concede the second one.’

The former Sheffield United boss also acknowledged Watford’s excellent run of form in WD18, which has seen them win six consecutive home games in league and cup.

‘It’s very, very difficult when the team’s in the ascendancy and Watford’s home record is fantastic. It was always going to be difficult to get back into it.

‘We showed a little bit more fight in the second half in terms of our forward play but we were always going to be vulnerable,’ admitted Wilson.
