With the season winding down, it`s the time of year players, managers and chief executives sit down and decide on the futures of the playing staff. With that in mind, and coupled with the Hornet`s tight financial belt ,VitalWatford will be taking a look at those who are out of contract, on loan or out of favour at the Vic` ahead of the Summer.
Today it`s the turn of Josh Walker…
Josh Walker is an exceedingly misfortunate Hornet, he signed at the worst time possible as Birmingham`s Jordon Mutch had signed 19 days previously. Little did we know that after just a month, Mutch would impress sufficiently enough to become the mainstay of the midfield alongside John Eustace.
Subsequently Walker went on to make just five sub appearances, totalling 28 minutes play as a Hornet in his debut season – far from satisfactory for a young man looking for first team football. As a result, Walker initially joined League Two new boys Stevenage on loan and impressed on debut before being re-called shortly after due to injury. Once more he was unable to break into the side and so he was packed off to Northampton Town on loan once more.
For my money, Walker is a decent player, but that is based entirely on what I saw of him during his Middlesbrough days. With no Mutch next season and Stephen McGinn out for a good time still, this pre-season will be a real good second shot at the first time for Walker. He will essentially be in direct competition with Ross Jenkins for the second central midfield berth alongside or in front of John Eustace.
If he knuckles down and works hard Walker could easily make that spot his own, failing that, he will at least be first-choice back-up behind Jenkins should be deploy the same system next season as we have done this.
It seems to me that the future of Josh Walker at Watford is very much in his own hands.
