Watford have joined the chase for Preston North End striker Neil Mellor, according to Sky Sports News.

The Lilywhites forward spent last season on loan with League One rivals Sheffield Wednesday scoring 13 goals in 33 league games for the Owls.

Mellor, 28, has a year left on his contract at Deepdale and new boss Phil Brown had hoped he would be able to hold onto the former Liverpool trainee as he looks to take North End back to the Championship at the first-time of asking.

Preston signed Mellor in August 2006 but has only made 63 league starts in five years with the Lancashire club. The former Wigan and West Ham loanee has made a further 50 appearances from the bench scoring 30 league goals.

At six foot and 13 and a half stone, Mellor’s more in the Troy Deeney mould than the Da1nny Graham mould and for my money we’re looking for a workhorse forward rather than a unit.
