Watford have missed out on signing Jermaine Beckford from Wealdstone United as Leeds United agreed an undisclosed fee for the much sought after striker.

Beckford, who was also a target for Yeovil, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Southampton and Charlton, spent a week on trial with the Golden Boys and it had been hoped that the twenty-two year-old would make the short trip to Watford on a permanent deal.

However, the striker, who has scored thirty-five goals in forty games for Ryman Premier outfit Wealdstone, has opted to sign for Kevin Blackwell’s Leeds. The fee is believed to be in the region of £50,000 which Wealdstone accepted from Yeovil Town earlier in the season.

Beckford follows in the footsteps of Stuart Pearce and Watford-born Vinny Jones who both started their careers at Wealdstone and then progressed to league clubs.
