Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd may just have found the “footballing right back” he has been looking for after former Aston Villa and Reading defender Ulises De la Cruz joined the club on trial.

The Ecuadorian international full back played 45 minutes in yesterday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Brentford under the watchful eye of the Watford boss before being replaced by Adrian Mariappa.

At 34, De la Cruz will surely not be a long term answer for the Hornets but Aidy Boothroyd told the official site “He`s here for a couple of weeks and he`s done well so far. He`s got good pedigree with around 90 international caps for Ecuador”.

De la Cruz started life on these shores with Hibs before Hornets legend Graham Taylor snapped him up for Aston Villa after an impressive showing in the 2002 World Cup.

He joined Reading on a free transfer in July 2006 but has since not been offered a new deal at the Madjeski stadium.
