The Carling Cup has put pay to Watford`s pre-season friendly against Aldershot Town after Malky Mackay`s men were paired with the League Two outfit in the 1st round draw.

The Hornets were pencilled in for a trip to the EBB Stadium in Hampshire as part of their pre-season preparations on 27th July but that spot of friendly fire has now been binned.

Instead, Watford will now travel in anger just 12 days later with every intention of a proper ding dong competitive clash.

Watford have only ever faced the Shots once in cup competition in their history – a 2-0 2nd Round FA Cup win in 1972 AND their record against Aldershot on their own turf is far from impressive with just 3 wins in 24 outtings?

?and they came in the 1940s and 50s!

Elsewhere, and other ties that have caught our eye at VitalWatford Towers are the right ol` south coast ding dong between Southampton v Bournemouth and a War of the Roses clash between Barnsley and Rochdale.

Stockport v Rochdale will put Lancashire bragging rights up for grabs whilst our near neighbours Stevenage Borough managed to pull off the plum tie of the round – getting drawn against crisis club, Portsmouth.

Apart from that there`s not a lot to whet the appetite in fairness.
