Watford`s man mountain centre half Danny Shittu got the nod, as expected, from Nigeria national team coach Berti Vogts to join the Super Eagles African Nations Cup squad for the upcoming tournament in Ghans.

The Lagos-born stopper is 1 of only 2 Championship players in Vogts` preliminary 22 (Seyi Olofinjana of Wolves also got a call-up) and is all set to miss 7 crucial games for the Hornets in the New Year.

Shittu is likely to be paired with Everton defender Joseph Yobo as Nigeria seek to win the African Nations Cup for the first time since 1994 but faces stiff competition for the centre half berths from Nice`s Onyekachi Apam and Taye Taiwo of Marseille.

Nigeria, who have named 10 English league based players in their squad, open their campaign against the Elephants of Ivory Coast (for whom Shittu will square up against Didier Drogba of Chelsea) before heading into games against Benin and Mali (who have the frightening front 2 of Stoke`s Mamady Sidibe and Fredi Kanoute of Sevilla) in the group stages.

Vogt`s is expecting his squad to meet up on the 4th January for a training camp in Malaga and this will leave Watford desperately short of Glory Hornet cover, with Matt Jackson, Cedric Avinel and Adrian Mariappa having played only 25 times for the Hornets between them!
