Player ratings vs. Gillingham

Hornet’s supporter Alex Prentice gives us his ratings for the ‘Orns during their 3-0 victory over Gillingham at The Priestfield last night.

Jonathan Bond (7) – Didn’t have a great deal to do but when called upon saved well, most shots were from distance and straight at him. Didn’t have to command his area or claim a corner once in the entire game.

Aaron Tumwa (6) – Considering he’s a left back and was playing centre back in a formation I’m guessing none of that team have ever played, he did well, he defended well and got stuck in, just showed inexperience and allowed himself to be beaten a couple of times.

Adam Thompson (8) – Was valiant and lead the line well, has a never say die attitude to throw himself at everything and despite his age, will get in there. Defended very well and stopped a certain goal with a last ditch block.

Dale Bennett (7) – Talked the entire game and defended well, a couple of nervous moments where he was rash and sold himself too easily.

Lee Hodson (7) – Looked to really enjoy his wing role, getting forward and putting a few dangerous balls in, probably could have tracked back a lot more to help the exposed channels.

Ross Jenkins (6) – As ever, was left to sit and clean up, and keep the ball moving which he did, had one moment where was sent through on goal, but opted to scoop the ball to the far post instead.

Connor Smith (8) – Involved in everything in the first half, good first touch and vision, passed the ball well, needs to work on his tackling as one of his challenges in particular was awful, plus needs to put himself up for headers.

Craig Forsyth (5) – Anonymous, showed for the ball when on that side and put a couple of crosses in, but other than that he bottled 50/50s, sold teammates short with passes and had he not set up Vydra for the first goal, could have been a four.

Piero Mingoia (8) – Was constantly moving, always wanted the ball and kept it well with good footwork, his ability to unlock the defence with one pass was crucial tonight, won’t be credited with all three assists but played a big part in all three goals.

Matej Vydra (9) – Performed very well, slow getting into the game but when up to speed he was everywhere, dropped deep to get the ball constantly, passed, moved, he finished well and he battled well, noticeably missed when he was substituted too.

Chris Iwelumo (c)(7) – Lead the team well and had a few neat little touches to bring others into play, his lack of mobility meant a few good balls were wasted and also meant he never got in the position to try and score.

Substitutes:

Stephen Hamilton-Forbes (6) – Did a tidy job without excelling, moved well; passed the ball well.

Ikechi Anya (7) – His touch wasn’t too great to start with, but he hurried around and got himself in defenders faces, his burst of pace means he found himself with space to run into on occasion, very promising.

Matty Whichelow (6) – Didn’t really get into the game until the last 15 minutes, showed signs of greed when cutting in and shooting whilst others were arguably in good positions.

Gavin Massey (5) – Don’t think I remember him touching the ball, if the club have decided he’s a winger, he needs to play out there.
