This morning it was confirmed by the official site that striker Matej Vydra will be returning to Watford this season on an ‘initial season long loan’.

The talismanic striker enjoyed a tremendous season at Watford back in 2012/13 scoring 22 goals as part of a prolific partnership with fellow striker Troy Deeney. However, following the Hornets play-off final defeat to Crystal Palace, Vydra moved on to the Premiership joining West Bromwich Albion on a season’s loan.

However, Vydra struggled to make an impact at the Baggies scoring three goals and starting just nine games in all competitions. The Hornets struggled without him too as they found themselves unable to replace his pace at the top end of the pitch and found themselves drifting in mid-table come the end of the season.

A return to the club for Vydra had been rumoured since the start of the summer with the only question being whether Vydra would be happy to step back down to Championship level. His re-signing will be just the boost the Watford players and supporters need as they look to bounce back from last season’s dissapointing performance and challenge for promotion once again. Also, the fact that deal is stated as an ‘initial season loan’ sends the message that should the Hornets return to the Premiership this season, we may well be able to keep hold of Vydra for longer than this season.

Welcome back Matej!!!
