Young attacker Connor Smith has this afternoon (Thursday) signed a new long-term contract, tying him down until 2016 with the option of a further year.

The 19 year-old midfielder-cum-attacker has been a regular I’m Gianfranco Zola’s match day squad this season, making his debut off the bench in the memorable opening day victory at Crystal Palace.

Having only signed his first pro’ deal with the Hornets in May, Smith’s future has now been secured until the summer of 2016, with Watford holding the option of an additional year.

An Ireland U17 & U19 international, Smith spent much of last season on-loan with local non-league outfit Wealdstone.

Speaking to watfordfc.com Hornet’s supremo Gianfranco Zola revealed his delight at securing the midfielder’s future:

“Connor is one of the young players that really impressed us straight away,’ said Zola.

“You can see he is a midfielder who has a good eye for a goal, physically he is very good and technically as well.

“He is the type of midfielder that can be good at defending and also coming forward so we value him highly.”

Congratulations, Connor!
