Watford have appointed former Olympian and Chelsea fitness coach Ade Mafe as Matt Springham’s replacement as fitness coach.

Springham left the club in September to join Brighton & Hove Albion and former Chelsea, West Brom, MK Dons and Millwall fitness coach Mafe is the man the replace him.

Mafe, 45, is a former Olympian having represented Team GB at 200m.

Born in Isleworth, London, Mafe came 8th in the final of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

He also enjoyed success at the World Indoor Championships in 1984, 1985 and 1989, securing silver at each Championships.

After retiring from athletics, Mafe become a personal fitness coach before spending more than a decade at Chelsea after joining in 2006.

Having departed Chelsea, Mafe moved to Millwall before following current Blues’ boss Roberto Di Matteo to both MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion.

Mafe was spotted helping the Hornet’s squad warm-up prior to today’s defeat by Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road and afterwards Gianfranco Zola confirmed the news:

“I know him and he knows me. He knows what I am looking for and he is a big appointment for the club,’ Zola told The Watford Observer.

“It is on the fitness side because our fitness guy left and I do not think there is anybody better out there right now than Ade.”
