Heurelho Gomes has signed a one-year deal with Watford, which may be extended by a further 12 months.
The Brazilian is out of contract at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of June, and so he will officially become a Watford player on July 1.
Gomes’ six year spell at White Hart Lane has stalled, with the 33-year-old making the bench just twice for Tottenham in the past year, not making the Spurs starting 11 throughout the entirety of the 2013/14 season.
He spent the first half of 2013 on loan in the Bundesliga at Hoffenheim, but only made nine appearances as injuries marred his spell away from north London.
Gomes began his career in his native Brazil at Cruzerio, before moving to the Netherlands in 2004 where he joined PSV Eindhoven. He spent four years in Eindhoven, making 172 appearances.
His reputation in Europe grew as a result of his performances at PSV, and this led to a move to England in 2008. Spurs paid a reported £7.8 million for the transfer.
Gomes has also represented Brazil at international level, winning two Confederations Cups and travelling to the last two World Cups.
Standing at 6ft 3in, Heurelho Gomes may be most remembered in this country for several well documented gaffes at Tottenham. However, despite a disappointing last couple of years, his experience and talent is there for all to see.
The level that Gomes has played at on a regular basis should prove invaluable in the Championship, and we at Vital Watford feel that this is a very promising signing.
What this means for Manuel Almunia is not yet known, but it certainly looks like we may have seen the last of the Spaniard at Vicarage Road.
It was rumoured that the 37-year-old was considering retirement and/or a move back to Spain, but as yet there has been no comment from the club or player.
Should Almunia leave, the captain’s armband will be up for grabs, as the ex-Arsenal shot stopper has been club captain since his arrival in the summer of 2012.
It was also previously reported that Watford were interested in former Yeovil Town ‘keeper Marek Stech.
The young Czech has however this week signed with his boyhood club Sparta Prague. Though Stech was linked with a move to Vicarage Road prior to rumours about Gomes signing, it is believed that the Hornets were considering Gomes before Stech made the move to Prague.
