Homegrown defender Dale Bennett has left Vicarage Road after cancelling his contract by mutual consent and joined Forest Green Rovers.

The 23 year-old centre-back links up with former Watford academy coach Dave Hockaday – current first-team manager at Forest Green – signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with Rovers.

Bennett had been on the periphery of the first-team picture at Vicarage Road since making his debut as a substitute against West Ham United in the Carling Cup in 2008.

The 5’9 defender would go on to make his full league debut for the ‘Orns in a 1-0 victory over Barnsley at the Vic’ in September 2009, scooping the ‘Man of the Match’ bubbly in the process.

Having found regular action hard to come by last term in particular, Bennett moved out on-loan, joining Brentford, before spending loan spells at Wimbledon and Yeovil Town this term.

In total Bennett made 14 league starts for the Golden Boys with a further eight substitute appearances – the last of which came at the Boleyn Ground last season in a 1-1 draw.

Good luck, Dale!
