Gavin Mahon is training with Watford – would it make sense to re-sign the former skipper

Gavin Mahon is the Marmite man of recent Hornet’s history. Rated by some and slated by just as many, but he’s back in training with the Goldenboys and the rumor is he might be re-signed…

Although I’m an advocate of ‘never going back’, I also think a move for Mahon on a short-term contract might not be the worst thing in the world.

For starters, he’s played with Sean Dyche and worked under him before as well. Although the club has changed virtually beyond recognition since he was last here in 2007, it is still the same club.

The long and the short of it is that we are short on senior numbers in central midfield.

John Eustace could well be off if the rumors are true (Derby County his suitors), Josh Walker obviously did not impress last season, Stephen McGinn is injured for a good five months still. All that leaves us with Ross Jenkins.

Touch-wood Eustace won’t leave but if he does then we need a direct replacement and with the fashion at the moment to play at least one holding midfielder, they aren’t growing on trees.

Ideally of course, Walker turns out to be marvellous, Eustace snubs any advances and Stephen McGinn moves a swift and full recovery. As a result Mahon isn’t needed and we can let him go at the end of his contract.

How many games has he played in the last couple of years? To be honest he left at the right time, bringing him back would be a step backwards imo.

Not a lot to be fair; he’s been very injured since he left.
