Hornet`s supremo Malky Mackay relieved he was a relieved man following the Goldenboys 3-0 trouncing of Reading at Vicarage Road today, the crucial win which means Watford are a Championship side for another season at least.

‘It starts with relief obviously and tonight it will be elation,’ Said the gaffer.

‘I think a lot of what has happened at this football club this year, there has been a lot of trying and testing times that are well documented.

‘And I think for us to stay in the division, which was the target all along, the group of players thoroughly deserve that.’

Coming into today playing against Reading, who have been a team on an incredible run and, yes, they’ve got nothing to play for on the face of it.

‘But underneath that they’ve got bonuses to play for, they’ve got contracts to play for and they’re playing in front of 20,000 people and they don’t really want to be shown up, so there was no way this was going to be a walkover.

‘It was always going to be a tough game. But to play the way we did at home in front of all those fans and score the goals we did is just reward for that group in there.’
Continued the Scotsman.

Opposing number, Brian McDermott, was understandably less than impressed with his side as they virtually failed to turn up for an extremely underwhelming 90 minutes:

‘We were well beaten.

We didn’t compete from the off, we didn’t win our battles individually and it doesn’t matter what team you are in the world, if you don’t do that to start the game you’ll have a problem.

‘They were stronger than us today and that was the second time since I’ve had the job that we’ve had a performance like that. It would be fair to say they were more up for it.’
Was the former Arsenal midfielder`s honest assessment of the game.

All that remains to be said is that although I`ve personally not always agreed with Malky`s team selection, decision-making, substitutions or the farcical loan signing of Ryan Noble, the big man has kept us in the division, and that`s what we all wanted pre-season afterall.

So well done Sir, now go and enjoy that pie and pint of yours!
