Malky Mackay has been named Cardiff City manager on a three year deal with the Hornets receiving and ‘undisclosed’ compensation package for his services.
As expected, the 39 year-old Scot was named as Dave Jones’ successor at the Cardiff City Stadium having spent six years at Vicarage Road in various capacities.
Speaking to The Official Site, owner Laurence Bassini said:
‘I can’t hide the fact I’m disappointed to see Malky leave.’
‘We must now move on.
‘The current Board – Graham Taylor, Stuart Timperley and David Fransen – will add vital experience to the process which lies ahead of us now.’
Mackay arrived at Vicarage Road in 2005 on a free transfer from West Ham and was instrumental in the Hornet’s rise into the Premier League.
Aged 34, Mackay made his long-awaited top flight debut with the club before hanging his boots up at the end of the 2007/08 season to join then-manager Aidy Boothroyd’s coaching staff.
Eventually Mackay progressed up the ladder and was promoted to caretaker manager in 2008 as Aidy Boothroyd left the club.
His predecessor Bendan Rodgers eventually took the role permanently but Mackay re-claimed in in 2009 when the Northern Irishman left to join Reading.
During his six year affiliation with the club, Mackay made 52 appearances scoring three goals. As manager, Mackay guided the Hornets to 33 wins from 99 game in charge.
