Following his strange half-time withdrawal at Loftus Road on Saturday, the reason behind Jay DeMerit`s replacement has come out today.

The American international was withdrawn at half-time despite there being no real sign of him struggling. However it has emerged that Aidy Boothroyd was simply not taking a chance on his star defender`s fitness.

‘He took a very nasty blow to the calf, a six-studded present from Wales,’ Boothroyd told the club’s official website.

‘He was struggling to make the game, but got through it because that’s the type of guy he is.

‘He just started to cramp up in the second half when he came out early, so I thought it best not to risk him as we need him fit for a longer period.’

Aidy Junior [Mariappa] took over the centre half duties on Saturday, after his obscure appearance in central midfield in the Welsh capital last Wednesday. It is not yet known whether DeMerit will be fit for Saturday`s visit of Blackpool so Mariappa could well feature again.

Mr Bodell says:

‘Why risk a player who evidently took such a severe blow a few days prior? In the event it didn’t matter, Mariappa was sound and Demerit also.’
