The speculation season has arrived and first to be dunked into the ink pot of players names that fuels the sport hack`s rumour mongering pen of choice is Charlton`s Nicky Bailey.

Watford are apparently “weighing up” a summer swoop for midfielder Bailey on a season-long loan deal according to the London Paper.

The same source reckons that the Addicks` free scoring midfielder “is desperate to get back in the Championship” ? though the Kent Messenger has him quoted as saying there`s “nothing he can do” about the transfer speculation.

In fairness, the London Paper isn`t a rag that usually deals in transfer tittle tattle so let`s hope there is smoke where there is fire in this case.

Bailey is exactly the type of player that should have caught the roving eye of Watford boss Brendan Rodgers – free-scoring, honest, creative all packaged up with a willingness to graft and stick his foot in.

The Addicks` £750k signing from Southend last summer has been the league`s surprise bargain buy despite Charlton’s ill-fated campaign – walking away with 13 goals to his name, the club`s Player of the Season award and a place in VitalWatford`s Alternative Championship Team of the Season to boot.

Let`s hope this one does run and run (unlike the link to Dele Adebola late last week)
