Watford have this morning turned down a bid from Wigan Athletic for defender Adrian Mariappa, according to the BBC’s Paul Fletcher.

Arsenal were believed to have joined the race to land the highly sought-after centre-back yesterday but it is Wigan who have made an offer today.

Fletcher, the BBC’s Football League blogger Tweeted: ‘Watford turn down a bid from Wigan for defender Adrian Mariappa. Quite a few clubs could get involved in that one. #bbcfootball’
