New Watford head coach Javi Gracia has said he’s not getting involved in the January window at Vicarage Road, he’ll simply leave that side of the business to others at the club.

Having come in the other day as Marco Silva’s replacement, Gracia has been hard at work on the training pitch and he insisted this week that it was his only focus, as transfer business is left to the club’s hierarchy.

Speaking to Sky Sports yesterday as he met with the media to preview his first game in charge – Southampton in the FA Cup this weekend – Gracia explained that he was likely to be without skipper Troy Deeney as he hasn’t trained following illness, but he also couldn’t talk about Deeney’s future as he wasn’t involved in that side of life.

‘Troy Deeney did not train this week because he was ill, I don’t know what will happen in the future. There are other people in the club working on these situations and I focus on my job. I’m not thinking in this moment about the players in or the players out, there are other people in the club to do transfer business, I have enough to do right away with my job.’

For the more traditional fan a manager not getting to strengthen how he sees fit still seems wrong, but no doubt Gracia is involved somewhere even if it’s only highlighting the type of player he thinks would bolster the group, but it is what it is, and with only one win in our last eleven leading to Silva’s departure there’s certainly a sense in his comment of having ‘enough to do right away’.

‘We are only focused on our next match. It’s a final for us, we only have one chance to go on in this competition and we are really focused on this match. This competition is very important, historic and we need to really enjoy and play as a final. There is no other matches in this moment in my mind, I’m focused on this competition.’

With the Deeney speculation ongoing for this long, it does feel like our captain is set for pastures new but hopefully that’s something for the summer and not January as everyone knows what a fit and firing Deeney brings to the side.
