Goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes has said that he welcomes the addition of a new stopper this January window if Watford decide to strengthen, but ultimately if they want to play they need to prove they are better than he is.

The 34 year old stopper was speaking to the Watford Observer following the weekend’s loss to Manchester City, and as well as giving his thoughts on how unlucky Watford were to lose the match, he was also asked about his own future as our number one with reports speculating we will bid for Malaga keeper Carlos Kameni – the 31 year old Cameroon international has been an ever present for them this season.

‘Nobody has a guaranteed place here at Watford. If someone else comes in they will have to fight for their place. I`ve never had a problem with any goalkeeper. If they show they`re better than me they will get a chance to play.’

As for the two one defeat to City with Watford having the lead and having had opportunities to extend the margin slightly, Gomes admitted everyone knew we had been the better team on the day but unfortunately their quality shone through right at the end.

‘I don`t think we deserved to lose but that is why they are one of the top five teams in Europe. It is the same disappointment we felt after losing to Tottenham. We played against a very good side but dominated the game. I am very proud of the boys because we did very well but we can`t be happy. We lost two games that we had chances to win. We now have to clear our minds. We have many matches coming up and we have to be on top of our game, as we were today.’

Gomes also said that obviously with such a tight fixture list and Manchester City being the third game in a week, it was having an effect on the players – but they have to keep on going.

‘I am a goalkeeper and I`m feeling tired. So imagine how the guys up front feel. We have no easy games, whether it is against the bottom sides of the top teams. I believe we gave everything today.’
