Head coach Quique Sanchez Flores has admitted that Watford were simply second best in the weekend’s encounter against Arsenal.

Making the trip to the Emirates Stadium with hopes high of a victory and a turn in form again following FA Cup exploits it wasn’t to be for Watford, and the gaffer knew the main reason was the side just wasn’t competitive enough on the day.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, a disappointed Flores said of the four nil defeat.

‘It’s the first time we’ve conceded four goals, and of course every time you come to play at the stadium of Arsenal it is difficult, but we conceded very easily the first goal and then it was difficult for the players. Arsenal played really well, really fast and in a high position, but we conceded the goals. We didn’t play with the necessary impetus and energy and finally we lost.’

With Etienne Capoue coming off shortly before half time and then Odion Ighalo making way at the start of the second, Flores went on to say that they were tactical changes to try and get us back into the game and get us a foothold on the match.

‘When the plan is not working good, we need to correct as quick as possible because we don’t want to repeat the mistakes. If I think something is wrong the plan changes, and sometimes the players also change.’

With the FA Cup semi final drawing nearer, Flores was quick to point out that he didn’t believe that Premier League matters had become a second fiddle to the FA Cup campaign, instead believing that Watford’s fantastic efforts so far this year had just caught up with them – allied to a natural dip all team’s suffer across a season.

He also pointed out our best chance for success at Wembley was in finding some form in the league again and boosting confidence.

‘Our focus is the Premier League. If we want to arrive well to the FA Cup, we have to play well in the Premier League. This is the main objective of our season, so it is necessary to finish well for respect of the fans, the players, the staff and the owner. I think it is necessary to respect everything in this profession. If you want to finish well it is necessary to come back to the good focus. We got 37 points a long time ago and it’s not good to be comfortable. It happens with a lot of teams and it’s football, but we need to try to check every single angle because it is important to be competitive.’
