Former Watford midfielder John Eustace is training with Derby County in the hope of earning a contact at Pride Park.

Eustace, 33, turned down Watford’s offers of a new contract, as revealed by his agent earlier in the week, in favour of moving elsewhere in search of regular first-team football.

Derby boss Nigel Clough has been impressed with Eustace and told The Derbyshire Telegraph that he could offer the former Rams’ loanee a contract.

‘John is the sort of character and player you want. I think over 46 games of the season there is a chance you would use him,’ admitted Clough.

‘He offers experience and know-how, either just in front of the back four or in different systems.

‘We look for differences, somebody to do something different within the squad, and I don’t think we have got anybody quite like John.’

Clough had tried to sign Eustace on a permanent basis after he impressed during a loan spell at Pride Park in 2009, but the Solihull-born midfielder returned to Watford as Brendan Rodgers departed Vicarage Road.
