With the retained and released list being announced by Watford, and confirmation that Joel Ekstrand would depart when his contract expired later this month, the defender took to the Official Site to give a parting message to the fans.

The 27 year old wanted to say thank you for the support he’d received over the past four years.

‘To all the fans that believed in me and supported me, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ve had four years at the club and the fans have always made me feel appreciated. I have some amazing memories from my time at Watford and some big highlights, like the Leicester semi-final at home during my first year, which was unbelievable, and then of course the promotion last season. I’m sad to be leaving in this manner, without having played any games for a while, but I hope some of you remember that I gave my all for the club, and I hope to see you again some day.’

He went on to say.

‘I would say I felt at home almost directly after moving to Watford. The English mentality and culture is very similar to Swedish and when I went to Italy I felt a little lost, so moving to England was like moving back home. I will miss a lot of people at the club – I can’t say all the names because I will surely miss some – but there are many people at the club and players that I will keep good contact with in the coming future.’

Whilst his future is unknown as he now seeks a new club, he did say he’d fully recovered from the cruciate knee ligament injury that has kept him sidelined since March 2015, and he was looking forward to the next step in his career.

‘My next step is still not 100 per cent decided. I hope to join a club that believes in me and where I can play and get going again – that’s the most important thing for me right now. I’m 100 per cent fit and I’ve been training with the squad since December as well as playing for the Under-21s, so I’m ready for my next move, whatever it will turn out to be.’
