Troy Deeney’s five goals in his last season games – taking him to seven for the season – could have seen him handed his first call up by England but still the Watford captain hasn’t been given an opportunity.

Despite Deeney’s goalscoring form of late and the injuries to Tottenham’s Harry Kane as well as Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge the phone call from Gareth Southgate didn’t come.

Walter Mazzarri believes first team regular – unlike some included – Deeney is in top form at the moment but feels Southgate should answer the questions about his lack of involvement not him.

Mazzarri was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.

‘You should ask the England manager these questions. All I can say is that for me he always plays and at this moment in time, Deeney is in his best form and scoring goals.’

If Deeney keeps scoring goals for Watford that’ll theoretically earn the Hornets points first and foremost and might eventually see him given his chance by England.

Half jokingly Mazzarri added the 28 year old probably needs to score a hat trick each week to have a chance.

‘I do everything I can to help my team, so of course I’ll tell him from now on that he needs to score three goals in each game because one is not enough. Also, if he manages to score three goals then there is more of a chance that we can win.’

Jamaica’s approaches have previously been spurned but if the desire to play international football is that strong for the Deeney it might be time for to take up the option!
