Rumoured Watford interest in former Birmingham, West Ham and QPR forward Mauro Zarate first surfaced last week.

It was claimed by Sky Sports on Saturday night his arrival on a loan deal from Fiorentina until the end of the season – with Watford having the option to buy in the summer – would be revealed in the next 48 hours.

However, reports in the Hertfordshire Mercury – citing claims made in Italy – have said this deal is being slightly delayed in order to prevent him coming to Watford with a suspension to serve.

The 29 year old has reportedly successfully come through a medical and will be confirmed as a Watford signing – if this was a loan or permanently wasn’t known at this stage – after Fiorentina’s Coppa Italia tie with Napoli on Tuesday.

Zarate’s sending off in the win over Chievo in the last round means the Argentine forward has a suspension to serve with an announcement being delayed until after that cup-tie as to prevent him from being suspended when the Hornets face Millwall in the FA Cup on Sunday.

All sounds a bit cloak and dagger doesn’t it but would make sense if such an agreement is in place as Zarate may as well serve his suspension at Fiorentina and return to England free to make an immediate debut in our fourth round tie.
