West Ham have not won since Curbishley’s first game, against Manchester United in December, and the fans chanted that the players were ‘not fit to wear the shirts’.

He admitted: ‘It’s not nice but the fans – and I’m not patronising them – have been constant in their support for us. They have turned out in their droves and got behind us from the kick-off but we haven’t delivered.

‘We haven’t done enough for them to keep it going throughout the game. We haven’t given them anything to get behind, certainly since I have been here, since the Manchester United game.

‘Don’t ask me why Anton decided to pull him back. There was no danger. But that’s the sort of thing that has been happening to us.

‘I did think Mahon was the last man. The referee has got to make a decision – I’ve seen people sent off before for that and that would have changed the face of the game for sure.’
