LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson has thrown his support behind Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd, which further suggests that the Hornets gaffer could be the English coach that new England boss Fabio Capello wants in his backroom staff..

The ex Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday boss endorsed Boothroyd when he told the worlds` press that ‘There are managers who have that little bit extra, like Aidy Boothroyd at Watford, who can make a team punch above their weight and move up the leagues’.

The Watford supremo, who was tipped for the U21 job back in March 2006, wouldn`t be everyone`s first choice given his preference for direct football and his lack of top league experience but he has publicly declared an interest in working within the national team coaching set-up.

That enthusiasm will go down well with the FA`s Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking who will liase with Capello over the appointment of an English coach and draw up a short list of suitable long term candidates.

The hacks down at the national redtops have also indicated that England U21 coach Stuart Pearce and Alan Shearer would also feature highly – alongside Boothroyd – on Soho Square`s hit-list whilst MK Dons boss Paul Ince ruled himself out of the running yesterday.
