New signing Essaid Belkalem got his first run-out in yellow this afternoon as Watford lost 2-0 to Northampton in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The centre-half, who has recently returned from international duty with Algeria, got 90 minutes under his belt as a Watford XI comprised of senior professionals and scholars lost to Aidy Boothroyd’s Cobblers at London Colney.

Goals from JJ Hooper and Ishmel Demontagnac did for a strong Watford side which also included trialist Gary Woods and former defender Fitz Hall.

Hooper had the visitors ahead 20 minutes into the first half with a good finish.

Wing-back Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and Diego Fabbrini both tested Cobblers’ goalkeeper David Snedker before the break and afterwards Javier Acuna and Sean Murray both came close.

Town’s second came after 64 minutes, Demontagnac with a low right-footed effort into the bottom corner of Woods’ net.

Watford: Woods; Belkalem, Hall, Brown (Johnson, HT); Barnum-Bobb, Battocchio (Byers, 75), Smith (O`Nien, HT), Murray, Pudil (Kyprianou, 61); Fabbrini (Mensah, HT) & Acuna (Ikpeazu, 61).
