Cristian Battocchio scores in defeat for Italy’s Under-21s against Belgium

Midfielder Cristian Battocchio scored for Italy’s Under-21s tonight as they were beaten by Belgium 3-1.

Battocchio, 21, only made his debut for the Azzurri’s Under-21s last month in the 4-1 defeat of Slovakia, but followed that up with maiden goal tonight.

The all-action midfielder put Luigi Di Biagio’s men ahead six minutes before the break, but Belgium came back to win with three second-half goals.

Victory for Belgium puts them top of the Group Nine in 2015 Under-21 European Championship qualification.

Elsewhere, Jonathan Bond was not involved in Gareth Southgate’s first match as England Under-21 boss.

A goal from Saido Berahino helped England’s Under-21s past Moldova, but Bond was not in Southgate’s matchday squad.

Ikechi Anya will hope to make his Scotland debut tomorrow as Gordon Strachan’s side take on Belgium at Hampden Park.
