Watford had reportedly shelved interest in Arsenal’s England left back Kieran Gibbs?

His asking price had seen attention switched to Middlesbrough’s George Friend. In fact it has been reported the defender had informed Boro he wanted to leave, opening the door to a proposed £8m deal.

The Daily Mirror is today reporting Marco Silva is still very much interested in signing Gibbs, actually ‘determined’ to bring the left back to Vicarage Road.

Friend, despite the added bonus of being able to play in central defence too, being a couple of years older than Gibbs, 27, was highlighted by the Mirror as was the fact Watford WILL NOT meet Arsenal’s £15m valuation.

As a free agent this time next year Arsenal have the option of lowering the asking price or potentially losing him on a free transfer in 2018 – Gibbs would also be expected to reduce his £60,000 a week demands.

Gibbs is looking for regular first team football, Watford could offer this but the Hornets face competition from Stoke and Brighton, all will be in the same boat though when it comes to the transfer fee and Gibbs’ wages.
