He may not be the “footballing right back” that Aidy Boothroyd wants but it appears Reliable Lloyd Doyley is back in the good books with the gaffer and rightly so.

With the Ulises De La Cruz move seemingly ‘on hold’ and the ressies playing John Joe O’Toole at right back, Doyley has emerged again as as a key figure in the Hornets backline – despite being transfer listed in the summer.

It`s been an up and down 18 months for the rock steady full back with Aidy Boothroyd telling money bags QPR they “didn`t have enough money to buy Lloyd’ last January but then put him up for sale 6 months later.

Now it seems Doyley has found a small spot in Aidy`s heart again. He was named as captain in the Carling Cup win over Bristol Rovers and the gaffer coo`ed “You know what you`re gonna get from Lloyd. If he plays like that every week I should make him captain more often”.

And Lloyd himself is keen for his run in the team to continue, stating “I`ve been working hard during pre-season and tried to show the boss that I am good enough and he has repaid me by showing some faith by starting me in the last 3 games”.

Sure he will always have his critics. Yes, his distribution is questionable and his form does tend to drop off after Christmas but give him a job to do defensively and he will show he`s the best man marker at the club.

Just ask Hameur Bouazza and Victor Moses who barely got a kick in the opening games.

After all, isn`t a defenders role in the team to defend? This overlapping, one touch passing lark is well overrated.
